For one thing, my numbers aren't right for the dynamic ranges of vinyl vs. CD.

For another, vinyl reproduces differently at different frequencies.

And another thing, I'm talking about bias in more than one context.

i m sure tobias can explain it better to you in detail...but one entire mistake is;

vinyl=160db

if i remember right vinyl has about 70-80db dynamic range?!

a cd should have about 100db as far..so your post doesnt really make sense to me?

In my own defense regarding mixing, compression, and dynamic range: that's the way it was explained to me.

This article researches the response and dynamic range of CDs and Vinyl:

The above article mentions subjectivity in regard to dynamic range and response. Here's a piece on cutting bass plates:

"That having been said, it is important to understand the limitations of this medium in order to make great sounding records. The first limitation is recording time and level (volume). The amount of time possible on a record side is entirely dependent on the cutting level (volume) and the amount of low frequency information (bass). Bass uses more space than treble."

http://www.recordtech.com/prodsounds.htm

The whole '80 oz per channel' looks silly to me now. However, my point is you have more information (like a full band with amps and a drum kit) than you can fit onto any recording medium.

I never meant to suggest that digital (data) compression and audio compression were the same thing, but it looks like that in my post. I am also asserting that digital recording is lossy data compression no matter what.

So much for 'so much misinformation in that post.'

I would really appreciate the correction where I am mistaken. Also bump for this thread in late 2011.

Yeah I'm with you all on this. I played on turntables for 8 years and I sold em to buy midi gear for Ableton about a year ago because I felt limited with the turntables. I certainly miss em when I want to play really long sets, but the capabilities of Ableton are amazing.

I've been using Ableton since version 4. I used to have one Gemini PT-2000 II and a Roland SP-303 (talk about shitty solid-state pre's). I have Torq but haven't used it in years. I was defending vinyl in terms of it's ability to store information (particularly bass).

I was awaiting more geekery (Tobias!) regarding dynamic ranges of various media (tape, vinyl, cassette, CD, MP3).

As far as I have presented and I understand, analog is still the 'analog' of a signal and therefore more full (subs and harmonics) than digital. The short, loud, bass record is one side note I would enjoy comment from veteran vinyl DJs.

It may be that I as well as the majority have switched to digital...

Lol, much love for the Skrill, but definitely not the point of me beating this dead horse. Most of the 'Skrillex' "YOIP YOIP" sound is above 100hz. 8bit heads can hear that on their Gameboy speakers (which is cool).

As for his tracks being loud... well yes, everyone's tracks are loud these days:

...but that doesn't mean they sound good!
