In a couple of months I’ll be moving East for a couple of years to teach English. Initially I’ll probably be in Bangkok, however after that I’m open to ideas (South Korea / China are probably topping the list at the moment).

Does anyone here know of any specific cities with especially good pockets of electronic music that way? Other than Japan, as my funds won’t allow this unless I can secure a job in advance. I’m a little anxious that I could end up somewhere with zero electronic music.

Also has anyone done similar? What did you do in regards to your studio equipment? I guess I will be working on cans for a while, however I’m considering selling up a bunch of equipment beforehand and buying some cheap monitors once I get set up.

Cheers

they got some great trance out in Goa, India. Which isn't exactly China, obviously, but if you're looking for ideas, i recommend Goa in India. It's like a hippie/electronica-fan's paradise. There's a club that was IN a giant tree, it was crazy. It wasn't a rave there, just club music if i recall (this was a few years ago) and to be honest I don't remember a ton of bass music playing from the speakers (which are everywhere on some of the restaurants / bars near the beaches) but like i said, techno/psychedelic trance. just fyi.

dudes walk up and down the shore selling rave-toys. It's awesome. And since it's India, you don't have to pay as much as you would in the U.S. or Europe for stuff. :gusta:

I'd be careful with Goa. My friends were just there and they've set curfews for music. They've been doing these crazy parties where there are 4 different dj's playing and you just wear a set of headphone where you can switch between the 4 stages and dance. Seems a little unnatural to me.

That's not true about Bangkok. They def have dubstep/dnb nights in the capital, but as far as glitch hop goes, there's no scene there yet as far as I know.

If you do make it to Japan though, there's a pretty banging scene in Tokyo. The unit club does dubstep x dnb wars, womb does drum n bass sessions every couple months, and then club asia hosts back to chill, which is a dubstep monthly put on by goth trad. The glitch hop scene is still in its infancy there, I saw like one or two parties, but there seems to be interest.

They also do all kinds of sick parties out in the countryside. They kind of harken back to old school raves in that you have to take a train for a couple hours, but they're sick. One of the few places you'll find drugs as well there and not have to worry about the cops. They do a party every September called Hikari Matsuri in an abandoned elementary school in the mountains. I know some foreigners there who picked up generators and do these sorts of parties.

Japan can be pretty expensive, I was just there last year. But if you don't mind living a bit of tokyo, as in an hour train ride, prices are really reasonable. I paid about $500 a month for rent and food wasn't that bad if you shop at the 100 yen shops or don kihote, which is the japanese equivalent of costco. Teaching jobs pay bank there too, average salary is around $3k a month, so if you're interested in making decent money of English teaching, it's a good choice.

That said, if you don't speak any Japanese, you'll have a tough time finding a job on your own. I've been studying Japanese for 8 years so that wasn't an issue for me, but I do have a friend living in Chofu if you want to talk to someone about it that's still there.

As for music production, Japan is heaven. I discovered these used stores called hard off, and they sell used electronics for super cheap. I picked up a pair of technics for about $120 total and a pair of Yamaha HSM80 monitors for about $400 total. They often have tons of analog samplers and synths that you can get for dirt cheap compared to anywhere else.

Most of the proper psy crew now avoid goa like the plague, have been for years. Far too touristy and pretty lacking on the fulltime party vibes.

Singapore supposedly has some proper parties.
