you should seriously look back into oakland (north/temescal/grand lake/hills) and maybe berkeley/alameda/even albany or el cerrito...

you will be close to SF where most of the parties are, its really not ghetto in most parts, just old...its really not that bad, just be chill to your neighbors, don't be an asshole, and you are good.

good people, good food, close to the hills and parks, close to the bay, a lot of parties in Oakland as well, and you will be smack dab in the middle of where a lot of creative shit is happening....

if you do move out here, hit me up, i'm down to chill, roll with you to a show or whatever, and help you get your bearings....

Well, thanks again to everyone who helped me look around California, and provided me with extremely helpful tips - the kinds of tips they don't print in guidebooks or "official" culture guides or websites...
I'm movin in today to a place in Fremont, CA., so I'm still on the BART line, and can get to San Fran or Berkeley or anywhere else in the area very quickly!! So thanks, everyone! And if you're in the area and feel like chillin or something, hit me up!

So.. Last April, I packed up my stuff, and left Michigan for the great WEST, headed to Cali. Then, a few months later I decided to check out Colorado, and see what's going on over there.. Well, it's an awesome place!! Especially for glitch hop!

Seriously, its crazy to be in a shitty city in michigan where there's nothing but recession and if you meet someone who knows about glitch hop it's like... "WORD? FOR REAL?" hahaha... and then moving to cali and "coli" (as i like to douchily refer to it) and seeing so much culture and so much going on, its insane !!

well anywho, im going back to Cali, and i remember that when i moved out there originally, i got a TON of help from people on this site. So, anyway, I'm moving back to Cali. Don't actually know where yet, except that it'll almost definitely be somewhere in the Bay...

so wanted to throw that out there, if anyone from cali wants to meet up and say hello and go to a show or play some music, or whatever, hit me up ! If anyone has any recommendations on cheaper places to go in the Bay, hit me up... I finally ended up in Fremont when i was there last time. I loved it in some ways, but travelling to San Fran was kinda a journey... 40 miles... do-able, but, you know, i'd prefer to not have to commute quite as far..

anyway yea, that's all i have to say about that. Thanks for being helpful, GHF!

i just moved to sf - i've been here one week today! i just read this whole damn 4 page thread, not realizing it was from last spring.

anyway i'll just put in a few completely random responses to all the incredibly interesting stuff that's gone by...

-on sf: i'm very surprised that people characterized THE WHOLE CITY as being pretentious, full of hipsters, and burner-centric. every neighborhood is different. i've also found that the more time you spend in a neighborhood (like more than an hour) the more you realize it's not just the stereotypes. like for example the castro is a lot more than just "gay".

-you want to live (relatively) cheap in sf? get a place by the ocean. i'm not kidding.

-i can't comment on the food in LA but i used to live in NYC where the food is unbelievable and the food in SF is equally amazing. and if you're paying 12.50 for your burrito you're buying it in pacific heights and not the mission like you're supposed to. btw i had a superb thai dinner the other night. my bill was $8.25. yes!

-"Mediocre artists borrow. Great artists steal." The quote is from Stravinsky, not Picasso. My interpretation is - If you borrow something it still belongs to the person you borrowed it from. If you steal it, you've made it yours.

-Finally, if you live in cal and go to a doctor to get a medical card - do not tell them you get migraines. if you want more information PM me, but please DO NOT do that.

CHEERS!

thinking about going somewhere between san francisco and silicon valley. wait, is it silicon or silicone? ... one reminds me of bill gates and facebook, the other reminds me of fake boobs.. and facebook ... (har har)

thinking about san bruno or san mateo or redwood city, menlo park, palo alto, that area.....

my thinking is this: iwill be close to san francisco without being DIRECTLY in it ( i dont mind at all a slight car ride or car/short BART ride) and i have heard good things about this area, except some of it is supposed to be pricey, i hear? id like to get a cheaper place but something i will feel safe in and i'd like to be able to luxuriously drive down the road to a restaurant or diner and get coffee and shit like that in an area that isn't too intimidating.. so yea...

any suggestions? fearful-worries? love? HAAATTE? swearing?

I'd say Oakland is your best bet if you don't wanna live in SF. Oakland's the shit. If my girl didn't want to live in the City, I think I woulda preferred Oakland (even tho I love the City).

I saw you saying something about Fremont... if you end up way out there, hit me up. I'll be in the south bay more often than not (at least through the rest of this school year) and I know some cats out in San Jose who throw lil club and warehouse parties and such. I'll PM you my number...

so, i have a question for y'all... im in san mateo ,got a week-long extended stay place... the room seems kinda rapey and rundown but... anywho, whatever, it's a week, i can deal with it hah.

my question is , is there shit to do in San Mateo? i dont expect it to be the fucking hub of rave culture, glitch, dubshit, uh... wonky folk... etc... (ha, wonky folk... i think that phrase just opened up a new room in my mind..) but i mean, is there anything to do around here w/out having to drive up to san fran?

i plan to spend a fair amount of time in sf, definitely, but if im not in the mood to go up there one day, can i still get my jollies? or is it a no go?

first person to answer this question will receive my highest honor yet!... 13 pez-themed smileys...

thanks!!!!!!

say now, this thread seems relevant to me again.
i wanna thank everyone on this forum for helping out with making this a super extremely helpful thread when i moved to california a year or more ago..

i m moving back there (im in michigan fora few more months. which sucks..) and i was wondering if anyone could recommend a place with the following conditions :

1.) possibly away from the city... even up to a twenty minute or half hour drive ..

2.) reasonable prices per month.. i mean... 400-650, is that possible in cali if im outside the city?
(do i need to be futher than halfhour away from the city?)

3.) preferably renting a house, but if thats not possible, whatever.

right now im looking at norcal... would consider socal MAYBE..but dont reallywanna be near LA.and idont wanna be off on a farmland, two hours from civilization. u know? but im too broke to live in san francisco like the rich hippies ive seen on haight ashbury. (they're not all hippies, i know..)
