grungestep.

so i recently posted a remix i did of the track, 'Loser,' by Beck, and i'm not saying it's HUGE or anything, not by a long shot - BUT, i've been making music for a while, and to see as many people suddenly take interest in it the way they did, it made me quite happy.. and although i'd like to say it was all because of my dope mad skillz, i know that, to be honest, alot of it was the track i mixed... (and, hopefully, at least partially because of my dope mad skillz lol 8-) )

but anyway, i started thinking about how culture goes in cycles, how in the 90s there was a 70s retro thing going on, in the 00's there was undoubtedly an 80s retro thing (and it still hasn't quite gone away) and im starting to see the 90s trends slowly roll back into popularity in different ways, which i find exciting because i love rap from the early 90s, grunge from the early 90s, some old acid house, etc etc... and i think there are alot of people who might dig on more remixes of this kind of stuff.. (Hell, maybe not JUST remixes, maybe also 'taking influence from' that era. )

so ANYWAY here's the idea.

Grungestep / alternative crunk / whatever

(im sure someone can come up with a better word for it than me! hahah)

A compilation with glitched out / crunked up / dope ass dub remixes of old grunge tunes... pearl jam, alice in chains, sonic youth, you know.. it would be just for fun, and would be released for free, because... well, selling it could get us all in alot of legal trouble.

who's up for this? Hit me up!

Or if you think it's a stupid idea and you want to crush my face in with a bat, well, idk, hit me up... hope no one wants to do that though... :blahblah:

nice =D. I just started producing a few months ago but because i grew up in the 90s ive naturally been sampling a lot of bands/artists from that era.

as far as a compilation i dont really have any material to submit thats worthy =(.

I was contemplating the same exact thing to myself today at the cliffs ...

Cycles and sounds ... and how grunge was , more or less, a back lash to vanity driven hair bands.

And as far as my research has shown me - time and time again - music goes in rhythm with the economic conditions of the times. During the mid 80's onward , alot of people were making alot of money and thus the music was more and more about the celebration.

In the past ten years , with the Bush Mafia de-regulating the requirements for loans , suddenly people that didn't have money now had excess money to BLOW. Just like the "roaring" 20's.

With the way things are looking right now ... Unless the Obama SS decide to borrow more money in the name of the American people - unemployment is going to run out and the depression will finally begin to show itself out of the shadows and into the forefront of the "Mass Media".

And of course - Grunge will have a perfect home to come back to ...
An Economic Depression (unemployment at 25% plus after extracting the birth/death ratio) and that dreary seattle sound will fit like hands in gloves. Add some womp , a touch of glitch, and some snare on the 3rd for the modern day update and its a match made in heaven.

Especially when you throw dirty festival kids into the mix (myself included at times) who will , of course, instantly gravitate to the songs of their long haired youth being remixed

... also maybe a 3rd world war starting with Iran and Isreal and then 2012 = its gonna be a fucking party. Just buy me a cookie and we're even :shot: ... I hope the "experts" are wrong.

haha. i cant give you a cookie metaverse, but please accept these 13 fine pez-smiley's instead:
:pez: :pez: :pez: :pez: :pez: :pez: :pez: :pez: :pez: :pez: :pez: :pez: :pez:

but yea, the economic argument you're making, 90s grunge was in many ways a backlash to the Reagan (and then Bush Sr.) years... and also to the super flourescent hair metal / synth pop greed and excess of the 80s (i know..clumped alot into that sentence. forgive me. lol.) but you look now, it IS similiar, we have an 80s-synthpop-flourescent culture to rebel against..

and yes, completely agree, dirty gritty remixes of what was dirty and gritty 15, 20 years ago. our childhood-memory-soundtrack. i have a fond memory of hanging out with my sister on a hot summer day, listening to alternative rock on this huge radio/stereo/boombox thing, painting pictures and chillin... mmm 90s. lol

Yea, i think im not the only one that would love a grungestep revolt! Now let's make a comp, or something!

:guns: :guns: :guns:

ONE other thing i didnt mention..... dont know bout everyone else...but i for one feel like ROCK music could use a swift and decisive kick in the ball sack... fucking with old grunge tracks or something to that extent could be a very radical notion, wouldnt it be fun to take rock hostage and manipulate it in new ways - ways that would scare and infuriate Rolling Stone Magazine? (then, after awhile, if it theoretically DID get bigger, they'd suddenly start to embrace it, i bet! ha)

(yes, i know.. i have a genuine bias against that fucking magazine.. im sorry, but you can't be THAT legimate if you put the Jonas Brothers and Britney Speares on your cover and STILL try to claim that you're all down with the music... Now do a fucking story about Glitch Mob, or Glitch hop, or dubstep! Shit, they don't even know about dubstep do they? hahaha! ...anyway, you get the idea. lol)

sorry for this rant... please accept these 13 crooked-mouthed smileys as a token of my apology.

:teef: :teef: :teef: :teef: :teef: :teef: :teef: :teef: :teef: :teef: :teef: :teef: :teef:

Agreed ... and thank you for the 13 pez :)

One song that is absolutely begging for some type of remix is THEM BONES by Alice in Chains ...

... If done right it would tear the fucking house down.

Does this count for old Trance too? I just got into old 90's true Trance! There are a few tracks that deserve proper glitch remix!

Anyway, you are right, I saw that a few months ago, exactly 90's. Or, here in Russia, maybe still 80's (OUR 80's). We are so late that I first thought the 90's finally arrived to my country too :) Nah, wee keep the tempo! All hail to Czech Republic!

Already got Nirvana 'In Bloom' and Pearl Jam 'Alive' locked in. The Alice In Chains is a good idea too. I'd love to hear that one.

i'm locking down: Beck - Loser (already finished, might tweak the sound levels tho)
Blind Melon - No Rain

and, I got a remix I started awhile back of Rooster by Alice in Chains, but I know a couple other people on here said something about Alice n Chains, so i think im gonna keep mine on the backburner for now.. if this whole thing works out, who knows, maybe it could be a series or something.. but I'm probably getting ahead of myself there..

so please, unless you've already started remixing Rooster by Alice in Chains, let me do that one another time, and feel free, this time, to remix whatever Alice n Chains y'all want.. THANKS!

No Rain is at 140 - I dropped it on Dubstep.fm once.

Deftones, Soundgarden, Smashing Pumpkins, Stone Temple Pilots, Radiohead (Pablo Honey), Mudhoney, Candlebox... so many good songs and albums.

I think I might take a crack at some Pixies for this...

I've got a Suck My Kiss by Chili Peppers one for ya, I put it up in the dubs about a month ago. I can send that one to you if ya want. I've also been wanting to do a deftones remix for a while now, so maybe I can bang one out.

hey, so just throwing this out there, i know alot of people seem to be into this idea of a grunge-themed compilation involving glitch hop/dub/electronic/bass of all varieties, now im curious to find out who specifically wants to be involved?

I know some people on here have definitely made it clear they want to make a track or two at least, some people are just well-wishers. (and that's cool if you're just a well-wisher and don't want to get involved in the music-making directly) but i just wanted to plan this whole thing out, find out if i need to keep asking people to get into it who i haven't talked to, or if there are more than enough people already who are gonna be down..

again, if there ARE "too many" people at this point (and when i say too many i just mean too many to fit on one cd) then there could be more than one cd if necessary.

im planning, at this point, to put it out on Soul Outsider Records, my little net-label.

and i can do graphics for the album if necessary (hell, it'd be fun) probably just a nice looking "GRUNGESTEP" logo and trying to incorporate early 90s/grungey color schemes, negative-colors, maybe mixed with new school photo-shop style.. i don't know, ill have to experiment. probably something on the more-simple side of things, the music will speak for itself im thinking.

any other ways of promotion or getting the word out to find artists? any suggestions?

I'm super excited about this one, everyone! I can't wait to see what people come up with.

and remember, experimentation is a good thing ! :joint:

I would love to take a part, but I am not able to produce sound at any proper quality level, so maybe a few years later :(

But I will sure make one and put it to Dubs section. This is my boy, I RESERVE this one! :)

Just thinking about this comp... thought i'd write up a couple paragraphs to describe this thing, for the final release... and just in case anyone thinks i'm taking this to seriously, i'm really not, it's all in fun. But i can't get away from the idea that it would be reeally fun to "take rock hostage" lol.

ALSO, for everyone involved in this, please hit me up with your mixes, ideas, everything. Got about 8 people who have either said they're gonna try their hand at this, or have at least expressed interest. More are welcome, have a few slots open still!

OK, here's that write-up i promised:

.............................................................................................................................................................

"GRUNGESTEP"

Everything goes in cycles. One minute you have over-indulgent, glammy art-rock of the mid-70s – and the next minute you have the fiery, stripped-down intensity of punk rock. Thirty years later, you see a fluorescent, 80s-flashback-techno party raging – and sooner or later, it starts to bleed into filthy, twisted, and disgusting grungestep.

This is a compilation created by a talented group of dubstep / glitch hop / bass musicians, who focused their combined skills to come out with a series of remixes of old grunge tunes from yesteryear. The goal was to take rock music hostage; torture it, fuck with it’s head, and give it a much needed kick in the groin. These are not electro synth-pop remixes, and this is not for people who wear skinny jeans – and it’s definitely not something that fits in with the clean-cut narrative of music history that Rolling Stone tries so desperately to promote. This is grit, grime, and grunge. This is culture jamming, at it’s finest.

So, we hope you enjoy our songs (while you still can) because as illegal as this compilation is, it probably won’t be available for much longer…

“This ain’t for Itunes…”
– Jay-Z, from the song, ‘D.O.A. (Death of Autotune)’

so the call for submissions is on, and the deadline is August 11.

If you are new to this thread and want to do a remix, by all means do one, but please scan this page to see what everyone else is working on so you don't do the same track as someone else :D

but yea, August 11, 2010 is the official last day for submissions, so get em in ! im super excited, got some of the tracks ready right now and this comp is DEFINITELY off to a GREAT start !!! Thanks everyone !!!

Easy man, hope all is going well with this! Just wanted to say, though I can't make any contributions production wise I'd love to design the art work for it! I know you've said that you'd like to, which is cool cause it's your idea but if your too busy or anything like that'd I'd be well up for it :D

I can also get a bit of attention on this cause I write for an online magazine that has a pretty good following here in the UK. I just did an interview with Skanky Panky Records for it.

So yeah, I can do either or both of the above if you want! Let me know! :D

This could be a really awesome Idea if pulled off right, but from what I have heard from the music around the forums there is no doubt it would be done right. Also you have that Beck song uploaded anywhere? That was one of my all time favorite songs back then!
