Hey guys,

I've been doing these really cool glitch hop/dubstep/dnb parties with mc's and they have been really taking off, we've been organizing them for twice a month in the past 3 months, and they've been getting better and better :D (before these parties there wasnt any dnb, dubstep or glitch hop at all at this city... and its the second largest in Mexico :O

Anyways.... I've just been invited by the government to do an open air event downtown, they have this really nice speakers and screens cause they've been inviting bands and stuff and passing the world cup games on the screens. I was invited to play this week and they gave me the whole day next friday..

...so I was wondering if anybody here has visuals that I can use for this event for free. Something that I can just put on a usb stick and hand it over to the sound engineers so they can put it up on the screen. Can anybody help me out?

Thanks!! :)

I don't know where to direct you, but maybe posting in a forum that caters more specifically to visual artists would yield better results? You might find somebody with some cool shit who is excited to have their work displayed on a large screen at huge, public event.

In the past (3 or 4 years ago) we used to use milkdrop visual plugin for Winamp and set the audio to linein so that it syncs with the music. Used to stick a keyboard on the floor under the decks and hit spacebar with our feet every so often to change the visualisation in time with the music.

However im sure there are much better visualisation these days though available for free which do the same.

You should check vdmx forums, and ask there.

http://www.vidvox.net/phpBB2/

Or find visual artists / VJ's groups on vimeo.
Just send people messages and ask around. Vimeo has nicer users then youtube.

for example: http://www.vimeo.com/groups/vjs

Good luck man.. post some pics/vids of that show here.

Win amp Milkdrop is free and beautiful and you can download more presets for the visualizer on the winamp website

Pay a proper VJ to do it or just stick a DVD on.

I used to VJ and one of the big reasons for quitting is that its a massively undervalued and incredibly time consuming job. If you want a proper VJ whos gonna add something to the event and give you a proper show be prepared to pay what your paying your DJ's. Otherwise just stick a stock visuals DVD on for some pretty pictures on the walls.

Yeah, SIXAM-BUDDHA has a good point. If you just want something on the screen, record some of electric sheep or play milkdrop on winamp, or the itunes visualizer.... especially if your budges is nil. If you have time, dig for video clips and learn a little bit of resolume. If you have a mac, spend your time learning modul8. If you had even more time, learn max/msp/jitter along with Cinema4d, AfterEffects, and Illutrator. It takes years to put together a life-changing video reel, or a large team of people. Think how much Dreamworks or Pixar pays their graphic artists to spend 6 months rendering scooby-doo's collar. VJ's are very specialized people with specialist fees. Getting Dr. Strangeloop to perform visuals would cost a pretty penny...

Your best bet is to find a 4th year Computer Science or Graphic Design major from the closest university and bribe them with booze, free tickets, and/or special favors....

or, altenatively, start looking through youtube videos till you find a few you like.

:O this post... its back XD

First of all thanks for your replies :D
We ended up using dvd's due to the budget, the parties were really small parties for about 100 - 120 ppl. We didnt charge an entrance fee and relied on the money that the bar payed us (because people here are so cheap that they cant spend 2 dollars in an event because that means 1 less beer for them so they would rather go to a crappy and free event, besides dubstep/idm/glitch/d&b are very unpopular genres here).

I wanted to try that milkdrop plugin for winamp with the line in audio but I forgot about that when this post got buried :S These parties were just too much work for the kind of pay we were earning, they were mostly just for fun :/ Its hard to be a promoter and dj at the same time (making sure the flyer is on time, handing it out, spreading the word about the event locally and on internet, organizing the djs schedule and making sure they are on time, making all the audio connections since most bars here dont have a clue on how their sound system works....

You should be ashamed of yourself for not having money.

I'm on similar situation here in SD, I'm involved on a party that has no cover, and it's for about 100 people too, but, if someone is making money, then everyone should be making money. If you pay your DJs and you don't pay your VJs, then you will never grow. Show the same appreciation to everyone involved and always give credit to everyone involved in your event. Pay 20/ 10 bucks less to every DJ and then you will have some money for a VJ.

How would you feel if someone booked you at a party where every performing artist is making some money, (even if it's very little) and you were the only one that didn't get payed?

Plus, consider that DJs usually take turns, have shorter sets, and most likely the gear will be ready for them at the venue. A VJ needs to bring projectors, come early to hang screens, wire the gear, then perform the entire night, when everyone left, he can start getting his gear down.

Every promoter should give this site a read:

This is probably a complete last resort.

But this website can just screw around with youtube videos.

I mean... As long as the volumes off it could be okay.
