So I'm sorry if this has been asked before, but I haven't quite understood how PLM has been able to get away with selling their artist's music on beatport. I know that one of the reasons he gives it away is because its sampled heavily and he doesn't have the money to buy the rights to all the songs he uses. Has this changed, or is there some law I'm not aware of? Thanks!

He has been headlining shows like a mofo, as well as touring with a pretty big stage show.. Obviously his income isn't hurting.. It is possible that he's decided to pay to clear the samples, or maybe he's just taking the risk..

People have been using sampling in music since the 80s. People get away with a lot more than you think they would be able to get away with. Generally i think the rule is that if you're not selling 1000s of copies, you probably won't get sued.

I think if u don't charge for it theres no infringement. The law.... last I checked, which has been a while, states basically as long as ur not taking away from money that would otherwise be received through sales of the artist or subtract from the original artists custumer base via ur music / sample a case cannot be brought against u and won.

It depends. There are a ton of different creative licenses. Some you can only put out with attribution, but you can make money. Some make you release the new tunes with the same license. Some give the end user free reign on their creative use of the material. You gotta look at those little symbols closely.

you can give out free music all day and if you are selling units through your own private site and in small enough numbers you are just a small fish, more than likely a small fish that couldn't afford a lawyer, let alone pay infringement cost.
