Definitely mixing in key helps. The software Mixed In Key is great for identifying the song's key, and bpm. This also has a chart which shows you which keys harmonically mix with each other. You can re-name your tracks with the Key and BPM before the song name (ie. 6A 160BPM Stressknot - Twerk That Remix)
Eventually my ear has become developed enough for key that I rarely use the software but renaming for live mixing is always great.
Play around with launch timing. Some tracks will mix seamlessly just by matching up the outro of one track with the intro of another.

Virtual DJ also has a pretty decent key/bpm analysis engine.

Do both, but think about it musically. You dont need to always mix a Cm track into a Cm track, you could mix it like Cm into Gm. Sometimes a difference of 3keys or 5 keys has this energy boosting feel.

Dont let rules trap your creativity.

i have matched stuff by key a way while ago when i was mixing trance (heaven forbid), but my BPMs are too all over the place these days (4% + difference) for me to be bothered working it out, maybe i got lazy. There is definetly an element of doing it by ear via tune selection going on subconciously by most people.

Mixing by BPM (beat-matching) seems like an essential to me  but if you can pull it off without beat-matching than props to you man! haha

I used to use mixed in key but found it was limiting my creative process too much when I played shows (like the post above said, mixing Cm to Cm etc.) So I stopped using it for live. However its a really useful tool and I know plenty of DJs who like to use it, I will say I like to use harmonic mixing when it comes to a mixtape as this is something people may listen to more than once.

If you aren't mixing in bpm, then are you trainwrecking? ;)

I found trying to set the key to all my tunes and mix in key too be way to time consuming and limiting as well. I would have never even considered this if I was playing vinyl. In those days, you were forced to do it by ear, so why change something that worked in the past. If it doesn't sound good, pick another tune.

people cant really perceive a 4 bpm difference, so you could be subliminally ramping things up or down without ppl really noticing consciously, could add a bit of variety...

not a dj btw, dont know fukall bout djing

I'd say both are important. But I agree with everyone who said to think of it musically...not always the same key, maybe relative keys or even parallel keys. In one of my downtempo tracks I have a parallel key change from E Major to E Minor. I have implemented this with other tracks and it actually is a cool contrast if done right.

With that said, having a relatively consistent BPM is a good idea for the flow of your set.
