So I'm moving to the Bay Urrrea from New Mexico and have previously not had to worry about bumping my subs n shit in the studio, now I am realizing that I will be moving into a much closer living situation to my neighbors, and wonder what producers do to accommodate to your neighbors...tips...ideas...????

Find your neighbors limit, then slowly help them push it...

Bump it between 9 and 5 when most respectable are at work. If they're not the respectable "real" job type people then they're probably cool with you making a little noise.

get a good pair of headphones, and get comfortable producing on them. Then when it's acceptable to bump it do some work on mixing/fine tuning. Worked for me for a few years.

Research local noise ordinances, and bump away as long as its not a violation of the code. Screw your neighbors, they will likely end up being the first zombies you have to kill in the Apocolypse anyway.

You could just do the ill.gate/datsik trick and bump until you get the threatening phonecall, then sample that shit.

Good headphones r key for night time production, if you live in an apartment building try an at least appear that u care about ur neighbors sleep schedule. I had a neighbor that would get annoyed and start shedding sum 1980's hagarish solos with his amp at 11, we eventually worked out a pretty good relationship via arguing by call and response jams that where at first very angy but overtime formed into sum cool jams lol.

If ur looking in Oakland theres sum cool converted warehouse artist communities where ppl are pretty understanding and supportive of the music making. Also west oakland has a lot of cheap refurbed victorians duplexes I've lived in them and known a bunch of other producers who have and havn't really ever had noise complaints, my theory is their built hella well in that old school manner and are therefore well insulated pretty well soundproofed, unlike these cheap ass townhouses and apartment building u find round here.

In my experience its more the fact that in the rough part of oakland, cops dont stop unless their is gunfire.

I've thrown massive parties with 20000 watt sound systems right on the edge of the projects behind the oakland coliseum. Just make note to get really well reinforced bars on your windows. also living somewhere where there is a tall front gate is huge.

I'm talking more on a with ur neighbors level, believe me these neighbors would have had no problems telling me to shut the fuck up. it's a pretty rough neighborhood yes but wut i liked about it is it's small, u get to know a lot of ppl really quickly and then u don't really get fucked with. I wouldn't go on any late night strolls with my girlfriend to b sure but the community kinda protects itself out there burglaries are also far less per capita than east oakland but murder is way more so there ya have it. i would definitely look at a place with good security no matter where u move, the wrong ppl hear/see a studio and boom next thing u know its gone.

it's not a lie.. No Chamber is in the ghetto, and the cops drive right by this spot all night long.

Get used to producing with your system turned down. It's not that bad and you can still crank it during the day on the weekend when no one cares ;)
