Im usually not one to talk shit on promoters.... BUT when you are given the run around for 2-3wks to get paid, that is not right. You are asked to meet at a certain place n time and dude never shows?? Whats up with that? Im sure other DJs, producers and musicians would agree with me. Why do we get no respect? What did we do to deserve this treatment. We did the work, NOW PAY US!

rule: get yourself paid before (ideal) or directly after the gig. Anything else usually leads to complication/disappointment.

I feel your pain, just gotta tax ass expeditiously!

@EVAC -Getting paid before a show is something that might happen in a perfect world. Honestly that has only ever happened to me once.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I would like to put together a general contract that can be viewed, dl'd and or printed up so that they can have a leg to stand on. I realise sometimes a contract for a smaller amount doesnt hold up much in the eyes of the law but it sure couldnt hurt. We as performers cant let people push us around and keep doing it, time and time again, with no remorse.

Im asking YOU as DJ's, producers, promoters and all around music people. What would you do? If there was a contract available to use would you use it? What would you want it to state? Would you feel you should get extra $$ for extra days past the said date of payment?

I know I am not the only one out there that has been screwed over. Instead of eating that pile of shit, help me make a difference. Help me do something to change this.

If you feel this is a total waste of time, let me know. I need to know what everyone else thinks about this.

PLEASE PLEASE give some input into this sad way of life.

There are form contracts out there for musicians to use. The reason they DON'T get used is because, unless you're some already well-established act, a promoter can replace you in five seconds with somebody who will play for less or even no money.

Hence the musician's struggle. Do we continue to play for free in order to get our music heard? At what point do we graduate from budding artist who needs the exposure to talent who won't play unless the price is right?

Chances are you'll never see your money, so just chalk it up to life experience and think twice before playing for that promoter again. It's all you can do :-/

Thank you for your input. Everything you said is totally true about easily being replaced but surely something can be done to help prevent such negative things from happening. It is truly a struggle.

Someone suggested an anonymous Promoters Review Site. What do you think about that?

Here is a word file I typed up based on an older contract I had when I played in a jam band.

http://www.mediafire.com/?tyoyiwbj0dz

This is just an example with some info written in so I dont forget how the finished should look. so if you use it make sure to take note of the places you need to fill in and change info.

Its from Colorado and I'm not sure how the law changes from state to state.

Basically I'd use when I can. Chances are the promoter wont sign and send it back to you. but I was thinking about hitting them with it just before the set or earlier that day. Basically when I ask for money if they later I say sign this.

IDK if it'll work but hey, why not try?

I look forward to hearing more feedback on this subject.

Thx

Douchbag promoters run out of friends very quickly. If theres one thing that will get you very far or nowhere, its being a massive prick. In the music industry id like to think people in the industry invest a lot of their blood, sweat, tears, and money into what they do and as a result are less willing to suffer people who act like dicks.

I reckon karma will take care of him sooner or later and you should just conserve your energy working with better people instead of worrying about it.

I don't know fonzie I think you sell yourself short. I as a promoter always like to have contracts with anyone who is not a close close friend and I think anyone that is playing out should absolutely ask for the promoter sign a contract. A contract will probably hold up at the very least much better than he said / she said in small claims court and clearly lays out expectations for both parties.
