This is an amazing free documentary on copyright and freedom of speech, particularly in remix and mashup culture. The whole project is absolute genius, anyone can edit or contribute to the video and the entire thing is constantly evolving. The documentary gets deep into issues like copyright and digital ownership, arguing that remixing or creating mashups (bootleg) is a perfectly legitimate form of art and is not a form of copyright infringement.

Seriously check this out if you are at all interested in freedom of speech or digital media rights/copyright issues, or even remixing, this impact this documentary is going to have is huge.

You can watch it online or download it...

From the site:

In RiP: A remix manifesto, Web activist and filmmaker Brett Gaylor explores issues of copyright in the information age, mashing up the media landscape of the 20th century and shattering the wall between users and producers.

Someone needs to re-edit the movie so it isn't a Girl Talk love-a-thon. 20 minutes in, I'm thinking "dude, I know you like Girl Talk, let's move on". The second half of the doc is good, but honestly the first half is really hard to get through. As much as I think copyright law is antiquated, the dude's idea that all things should be free to all people is kind of proto-hippie nonsense.

the love is obliviously there and greg is a great example of plunderphonics and all that, but he is not the greatest premise of an entire movie about CC.

this is a pretty good movie but again the guy really loves girl talk and it is a bit much. I recommend anyone that cares about this read lawrence lessig's remix: making art and commerce thrive in a hybrid economy.

Surrrrsiously. The filmmaker needs to talk to Negativland, not Girl Talk's dad.

lol yeah I agree... I was getting a little sick of the girl talk hype myself, forgot to warn people about that. The movie does have some super interesting stuff though, glad to see some of you checked it out...

I'll check out the lawrence lessig thing you mentioned klafka, thanks.
