i implore all of you to do whatever you can to spread the good word about this.

This. Can. Not. Stand.

if this bill passes, it could completely fuck up my w ay of life, as well of many of yours. think about it: if you upload an unauthorized remix to soundcloud, you could get five years in the can. and think about the precedent it would set. free speech is quickly slipping away from us.

we're not talking about passing things off as your own, selling them, or even distributing them for download. you could get shut down for even what essentially amounts to having users on your site discuss copyrighted material.

i want to do something, but i don't know what i can other than spreading the word.

writing to representatives has proved ineffectual to say the least in the past.

any ideas?

^^^^^Sign that petition!

This bill is really the worst piece of legislation I have seen in a LONG time. Conceptually it is written to hand off ridiculous and unjustified amounts of control to the established copyright and patent groups.

This puts a massive burden on content providers to take down ANYTHING that a "copyright holder" requests, with no burden of proof required. NONE!

Let's say you are a musician who creates something with the same chords as a Rihanna song. It isn't the same tune demonstrably, but sounds sort of alike. All it would take is for someone @ Universal/BMG/Whatever to email whomever is hosting your tune and flag it as "infinging content", even if it is demonstrably not infringing! Worse, the "copyright holder" can take down the ENTIRE DNS ENTRY, which could possibly be used for an entire network of sites! And then you would need to go to court to appeal, and who knows how long that could take - maybe forever!

So obviously this bill is a giant burden on smaller artists like ourselves, and also on content hosts and social sites like reddit, facebook, even google.

Shit, it sucks to be an American. How can one feel so powerless to influence legislation in a 'democracy'?

the part that fucked me off the most is they're going to make VPN's /tor illegal. i mean fuck don't we haven't any form of privacy anymore?

what if you are into dissent/activist. sites like wikileaks will be gone, governments will be secret, dissenters will be silenced every day we seem to be moving towards a totalitarian government, and it's not just the US its everywhere, it's really concerning.

ever watched v for vendetta? give it a couple of years and our society will really be like that. Say goodbye to your late night raves/partys, the government doesn't like those.

the sad and realistic truth of our democracy = a very elite few make the decisions for the majority of our country.

I sincerely hope this does not go through...

That sucks.

Also, it's sad that Obama said that he was against the indefinite detention bill that just got passed, and then he let it get passed when the time came. He says he's for net neutrality, but he'll probably change his opinion on that too when the time comes, and he won't veto it.

We can't predict the future. But if this keeps up I have no desire to stay. Perhaps I'll return to my north european roots..

I voted for Obama, and never ever voted Republican.. ( and likely never will ) but after four years I gotta say, the man's a coward. Yea, I wouldn't be suprised THAT much if he did cave on this (like he caves on most things that the Republicans want... he hasn't been trying to win over liberals cuz he figures he's got them in his pocket already, and I think he's almost a republican in many ways) so.. I don't know.. I'd like to personally see how things go with this bill, and also see how the America is a Battlefield bill goes, and also see who's elected prez next year.. but if things get REAL bad in the next couple years, who knows, maybe i'll go ex-expatriate on everyone's asses too, and move to South France or the U.K..... Wobble it up with Rusko and the queen..

I've been on this for some time now, the people that think they control the world are getting old and senile.

Just because they pass something like this doesn't mean anyone is obligated to assimilate to it, if some random police officer shows up at you door just let him know you're well aware of your rights, and that to enforce the "bylaw" or "statutes" or "acts" they must be imposed upon the "person" or "corporation" .

If you do not agree that you are a "person" or "corporation" ( look on your birth certificate or any thing else that you use as government ID, it says "not to be used as identification", which is why you receive your "bills" in capitals, the "name" is bought and owned by the Crown Legislation.

All you need to say to the officer is " Am I obliged to have such a thing as a name? " and " Are you detaining me or am I free to go? "

If you provide a First, and Surname, along with date of birth, you're lying to the Peace Officer.

http://worldfreemansociety.org/Welcome+Page

Enforce your rights.

Motion to Quash.

Entheogen i do love your point of view. Too bad it will never work. The cop will reply with "tell it to the judge" and proceed to haul you into custody.
And my state ID says State Identification Card and nowhere says 'not to be used as identification' You may just be certified as more than a rebel.

IN FACT: it specifically states "For Identification Purposes Only" on my ID so..ya.

Right, SOPA and PIPA are pretty much done for, but now Lamar Smith has made THIS fucking abomination of our rights

http://www.slashgear.com/sopa-sponsor-h ... -20210264/

spread word folks. It's gonna be another tough battle, and nobody is going to want to fight it because it will be marketed in a way to make the common person think that only a pedophile would oppose it.

Cancer, was gonna suggest changing the title of the thread to reflect the recent developments in anit-piracy legislation. Awareness needs to be raised about these two new issues, both are worse than SOPA or PIPA, and if both manage to pass they will completely break the internet.

it may be too late for stopping ACTA, but it couldn't hurt to sign this petition:
