straight up. Just throwing that thought out there. i know a lot of cats sample rap, i've certainly done it, and there's nothing wrong with rap.. im listening to some right now... just thinkin out loud here.. and also - i don't know what a solution would be. Like I said, just throwing the thought out there.

yea.. and i know you and i have definitely talked about rap vocals in glitch hop

i guess im saying.... i was always interested in how different vocal styles emerged.. like, the way i see it, (in western music, anyway..) there's blues music.. singers throw some vocals around a melody, and that eventually transformed into rock.. and then i see the screaming of punk or metal (or godawful 'screamo') as it's own style.. and then rapping as it's own style, fast Rhytmic American Poetry (R.A.P. lol) and i really like the middleground between rap vocals and rock vocals... like... sublime, the transplants, umm.. (help me out for examples here, it's been awhile since i really listened to much rap metal..lol... ) but you know what im saying...

and then with glitch.. or even breakcore.. a music thats so fundamentally disfigured and tripped out in a lot of instances.. sometimes heavy on the samples, sometimes not.. i can see where the sampling comes in, as there's a lot to do with hip hop and electronic music in glitch hop, so obviously sampling is second nature to a lot of people (again, ive been guilty of this, not ashamed to admit! ha) so i dont know.. what would an 'original' tripped out vocal style sound like that would fit in parallel with this style of music we're making here on this forum? a hodge-podge style of different vocal styles all cut up into one line of music?

.. like.. ok let me give an example of what i mean...

imagine someone singing "Eeeeeverybody gets naaaaked for Wiiiilllll...:
and then the first word is screamed, the 'gets naked' sounds rapped, and 'for will' sounds like blues...
... so maybe it sounds like it was sampled from a few different sources, but from the same vocalist, and all-original, too.. that way it's still all over the place, but stylized if done right...

im just brainstorming here..

i think the point is, everybody needs to get naked for will. i think we can agree to that.

At first when I saw this post I thought of Burial

... Or maybe some Polish Ambassador off "Future Sex Computers"

But then I saw:

And I think you're really on to something with this. I can't really think of a lot of tracks that have done that, although I'm sure there are a few (maybe limited) hip hop examples out there if you look. But I think primarily in Hip Hop the cut and paste from different tracks thing is primarily used for breaks. You're talking about making it an integral part of the track, sounds like.

The "processing in different ways" part is the really unique thing I think... Especially if you made it obvious. Typically Hip Hop records will just straight up sample (and sometimes drop to 12bit from the original sample rate - an old holdover from old hardware samplers). If you actually knew how to do blues vocals and rock vocals and super reverb vocals and super stutter vocals you could probably do some pretty killer line edits and maybe intersperse DTMF tones you could probably do some "trademark" things with just that.

You could keep it "hip hoppy" a bit more by taking the whole line and converting it to 12bit, like the old samplers did. Or just use an old sampler/emulater for the final playback.

TTV did a song or two like that. their 'where is everybody?' remix on Things Falling Apart is the only one i can think of ATM. and can't forget trent doing it himself on Starfuckers, Inc. that's also how i was doing my alternate bush remix for GrungeStep. i found it too labour-intensive to be an "every track" thing and still be satisfying.

it would be better to try to emulate that sound vocally live (with or without effects). or you could do a beastie boys thing and split up every line of every verse between a few people singing differently.

i agree that you're definitely on to something. :)

also, Mike Patton switches vocal styles constantly throughout his songs and that can be really cool. him and gibby haynes both have habits of busting open mics and effects processors on stage and fucking shit up. :fire:

i think more glitch hop artists need to start sampling real wordsmiths instead of throwing a filter on a Lil Wayne acapella in every other track... Glitch Mob had a good hit on that with El-P and Machinedrum with MeLo-X, but it doesn't come up nearly often enough. i'd like to see some seriously dope Aesop Rock or Sage Francis remixes.
