Hey peeps so I'm about to embark on the forbidden road of mixdowns in headphones (not by choice of course but necessity). Just got a pair of Ultrasone pro 650's being burned in right now. I have been hearing a great deal of positive feedback (good mix translations imaging wise)
I came across 112db redline monitor plug in http://www.112db.com/redline/monitor/but have also heard good things about this http://www.midnightwalrus.com/Canz3D/which is only 10 bux....
general thoughts on headphone mixdowns and soundstage/imaging also very welcome.
big thanks

The whole idea of me using my cans is that the frequency response is far flatter than my monitors in my untreated room so using plugs which attempts to replicate a room would be a massive no for my personal use.

HOWEVER I dont do the whole mixdown in my cans, just use them for reference / more detailed mixing, phone are a lot more fatiguing than using monitors I tend to find so I can see the point of plugs like those if your using them alone to mix. However I have no experiance with any of them.

i was in your situation a lil while ago and bought the redline monitor. it worked pretty good for the situation. you can mix for SUBSTANTIALLY longer than you could with regular headphone stereo depth. i still use it for airplane mixing, etc. sucks not to have monitors, but gotta make due somehow!

I use the redline plug in at the moment (travelling, mixing on cans).

I find it much easier to apply reverb with it on.

It doesn't sound like monitors to me, but it does give a more natural stereo image. I've gotten used to using it for mixing.

I much prefer mixing on monitors, but I find I get by with headphones.

I mixed the tune in my sig with it, I don't know, you be the judge.

sounds interesting...just throw it on the master and go to town then? It seems like you could save in the long run by just buying some o.k. monitors. If the plug didn't cost $100 it would be worth buying (I'm broke and would rather save up a little longer for monitors). I'm gonna download the demo and see what it's like though. I too mix with headphones and my mixes have suffered cuz of it, so these plugs sound like a good option however.

I have problems putting on a plugin that screws with my stereo image unless i no exactly what its doing. don't trust it. I'd do a lot of mixing and playing back through ne decent speakers just to judge exactly HOW this plugin is working. I have a pretty decent grip on mixing in my cans (beyer dynamic DT770's) only because i have been forced to do so quite a bit do to shitty living situations. U can mix on anything so long as u no how it translates. My two cents.

Yeah, I've found it beneficial to just try listening to your mix on as many different speakers as possible: shitty headphones, my iHome, the car, whatever. It helps you figure out the eq/level problems pretty easily. The shittier the speakers, the more obvious the problems in the mix are. The only problemm with using shitty speakers is that the sub doesn't come through.

if you already have ultrasones you DON"T NEED THE REDLINE PLUGIN.

ultrasones have a technology called S-Logic in them. this does what the plugins do, but for real. it uses speaker placement and some other whatevers to make it so the sound shoots into your ears as if you were listening to speakers in front of you.

adding the redline plugin may just hurt your mixing process.

i recommend trying out the ultrasones for a while. thats what i am using and everything is coming out exactly as intended.

But i don't think the ultrasons have crossfeed, or incorporate the natural different delays between frequencies.

Isn't it just that the sound comes from slightly forward pointing back? I am 99% sure they couldn't possibly have the DSP effects of a plugin. They'd have to have ad/da convertors in them.

So just to clarify, is this plug-in only used for monitoring purposes, or does it actually get rendered in mixdown?

No, you definitely don't render it in mix-downs.

You put it as the last plug in on your master bus, then bypass it when you bounce.

Oh OK, thought so. Might have to check it out, mixing on a pair of HD280s tends to grate on my ears after about 10 minutes of solid playback, and after an hour of mixing it down perfect in the cans it'll sound like shit on my rokit 5s (and vice versa when mixing on the monitors )
