i ordered

http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/HS10W/

but they are sold out.

they want me to get this.

http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/SBX10/

any feedback about either of these? the hs10 is sold out everywhere online and has a 3-4 week wait. i searched amazon, ebay, sweetwater, musican's friend, guitar center, zzounds... apparently 1 place on amazon had 1 left but wanted almost $150 MORE than asking price.

i am wary of anything maudio. so is the sales rep i have been dealing with through sweetwater for nearly 4 years now. but he also likes to think they are doing better since avid is in control of them 100 percent now.

anyhow, feedback welcome.

im thinking i will wait.

My experience with m-audio (and i own plenty of it), is its decent for the money, they can sound alright but sometimes i feel that their manufacturing is a bit shotty (note that m-audio is owned by Avid, i.e. digidesign, protools). Some of the m-audio gear I own, profire 610 (solid), axiom pro (soso), and I think i have some other stuff too but can't remember at the mo.

Have you considered the KRK's? I have a KRK sub and lurv it, albeit its way too much for my room. Sweet water doesn't sell them, but you can get them down at guitar center.

I wouldn't get an maudio sub. My advice is to get the best sub you can afford. After all it's quality is going to impact how you make mixing decisions about the low end. I would get mackie or genelec.

On another note, before getting a sub, I assume you have a well treated studio space with plenty of bass traps. If not, a sub will be more problematic than helpful. I found after proper acoustic treatment, my old mackie monitors put out plenty of low end. Bass is more more solid and focused if you eliminate room nodes.

Good luck.

A couple of my friends have both got subs in the last 18 months, and both of them find it harder to mix the low end appropriately. One has sold his, the other uses it for pleasure listening and turns it off most of the time for production.

I'd sooner sell my current monitors and use the sub money to upgrade to bigger/cleaner monitors with a more extended low end.

Have you been having problems in the sub area? Though about getting a good pair of headphones and balance your sub against a reference track?

I had the Hs50's so I thought about getting one of these as well. But then I realized I was never actually going to mix with the sub on, it was really just for little extra thump when I was creating or listening to music. Besides that my room wasn't that well treated so I figured i'd be better off throwing my cash into that. So instead I just grabbed a home theater sub at a garage sale and wired up on an on/off foot switch for it. Worked really well and was basically $375 cheaper.

As far as M-Audio goes, I really like some of their products, and they have drastically improved. But, my first monitors were the BX5a's and they were so awful I'll never by another loudspeaker from them again.

I would look at the JBL stuff. I've been really pleased with the LSR4312P, and they have a 10" in the price range you're looking at.

For what it's worth, I only use the sub when I'm done with the mix and maybe some A/B'ing while I'm working on the kick/sub/low freq's, so it's a bit of $$$ for not a ton of use (for me). I think the money is better spend on acoustic treatment or better nearfields.

In terms of online stores selling out... don't go for the alternative... wait or go to another store.

In terms of getting the sub: follow the wise ppls advice above.

This

I grabbed an RP10 about 3 weeks back and its hardly got any use so far, I really really need to treat my room before I mix with it properly, although when I have used it towards the end of mixdown its been sooo nice actually being able to mix that low, really cut back on the ammount of ABing ive been doing on other systems just to check sub levels.

Even once the room is treated, p'ssing off others living around me comes into the equation a lot, turning the sub on really ups the ammount of sound going through the house so I dont think id have it on for long periods of time morally.

But it does sound fucking good.
