Has anyone checked this out before? It's free, and looks really good to me on first glance.

Yea, I use it for school. I'm taking a Csound course this semester with Dr. Richard Boulanger and he requires it as a teaching tool. They have a free CSD player that plays any Csound file, but the premade synths that come assembled in Max are not free (the advertised 120 plugs). If you know Csound and Max it's pretty fun. Any sound is possible, the only limitation is your knowledge of synthesis and Csound.

Some of the plugs are CPU heavy, but the power of Csound makes it worth it. You can also make a cool sound and freeze it of course. Another cool thing about Csound is if you know C++ you are able to extend the language by adding new opcodes. The algorithms that are already there are fantastic as well, and were written by some of the leading acousticians, scientists, programmers, and musicians.
