I dont even use reason any longer but I still havn't found a tape saturation that comes close to it.
As previously mentioned, Vintage warmer and Ohmicide are a few of my go-to's and sometimes Izotope's Trash although these all add latency and weight (except for ohmicide, actually) to your daw project as soon as u add even one instance.
There's a free plugin (by betabugs I think) called crayon filter and it actually has a drive knob that produces some pretty nice saturation when used sparingly.

is there any technical reason why ableton's saturator isn't good enough? or is it just the option of variety?

just curious!

i try to stay away from saturation of my bass i find giving it a good eq job and the right compression pushes it real nice.

stauration post filtering can lead to some very intereesting results. another thing i have been doing recently is making my own oscillators by generating a sine wave and running it saturators (often extreme settings) then resampling. def a time waster, but it can be a fun experiment to understand saturation better.

This is a really good idea, especially combined with other effects (Akira Kiteshi said in a Q&A that he had good results from tuning a flanger to the frequency of the note being played, which I thought was pretty cool). Also even just slightly noticeable saturation can spice up a sine wave bass into something smooth but still interesting.

I use the ableton saturator a lot and I've gotten really good with it (at least I think)... but I feel like i might need something more beefy.... vintage warmer or something like that might be what i need.... but every time i talk to audio engineers they tell me not to use plugins like that except when mastering

i make most of my own drum samples, and therefore REALLY have to beef them up to even begin to compare to the samples that came with komplete or something like that... so i am tempted to run some of my samples through a harmonic exciter or vintage warmer... but yet again, engineers have told me "nooooooo!" but never get any info on what I SHOULD do... just what I shouldn't

T H I S.

Kombinat is the fucking business!! We've been using it like mad on stuff for the past 6 months or so and it has really become a 'go-to' plug in the arsenal. = HUGE!

for $50 is an absolute steal. Worth every penny.
