Freddy Todd hails from Detroit, Michigan and makes delicious beats all day. He has played in multiple metro-Detroit based bands including Ioriba, Tone Poets (his current live jam-tronica jazzy funk/rock band with drums, bass, occasional guitar, and Freddy on live keys routed through computer effects and controls), Cave System (his ex-progressive-indie-rock band), Breezee One (swagged out female hip-hop), and SplaTTerboX (his current live DJ and electronic production project with GRiZ (formerly DJ GK)).

He plays many instruments ranging from drums & percussion to bass, guitar, mallet instruments, and keys. Freddy has also produced various Detroit based hip-hop artists including Breezee One, Black Mic, Fat Ray, Scorpion, and San Francisco based Joe Mousepad. He grew up making music, playing, and throwing shows with the Scrummage music and art collective (Lord Scrummage, Breezee One, Mannikin, Deastro, Benny/Lenny Stoofy, Eggslave, The Gremlins, Just Boyz, Bones, Slufter), starting around age 14.

Born into a musically talented family, Freddy was exposed to live music at an early age, with his dad's drum set in the basement at his disposal as soon as he could walk. His father played drums, guitar, and sang for a living in The Fred Palmer Band during the late 80s and early 90s and was also a song writer. His grandfather played saxophone in a swing band and he is also related to "the father of American music", Stephen Foster (who wrote Oh! Susanna and other classics) and is even related to good old honest Abe Lincoln (great^5 grandfather).

At age 19, after a year of studying computer engineering at the University of Michigan in Dearborn, he dropped out of college due to financial, corporate, and bureaucratic BS scholarship reasons. So instead, he decided to take over the world with his vibrations and began flying around the nation to begin his official musical career. Now, at age 20, soon to be 21, he has two full length albums and 4 EPs under his belt, which are both topping charts on Addictech (Neon Spectacle Operator held #2 for 6 months and is now at #3 on Addictech's yearly chart), as well as support all over the world. Todd definitely does NOT plan on quitting music anytime soon.

He has three previous Bandcamp.com self released EPs (Hallowz Eve, iLLegal summer 'stache, and Winter Soulstice), four officially released EPs on the Seattle based label Car Crash Set (Ghost Dance Messiah, Can't Fathom This Remix EP, Space 5 Penthouse Remix EP, and a combined remix compilation EP of all the remixes for both), and two full length LP albums on Simplify Recordings (Neon Spectacle Operator and Painting In a Silent Eternity - both produced and released within 6 months of each other). He has also released remixes for Ben Samples, Mochipet, +verb, Bobby Tank, and Zebbler and Encanti Experience, as well as many more in the works. You can also find a plethora of FT single tracks scattered around a few of the electronica underground's compilations including Aisuru One and Bass From Above I (two fundraisers for Japan), and Waveform Modulation's Ancient WoLF LuRCHeRZ and GalaxC Girl presents Bassage Therapy. Freddy has been touring all over the United States and just wrapped up a rowdy month long nation wide jet tour with bass-comrades Minnesota (Santa Cruz, CA) and Omega (Denver, CO). You can keep up with his latest releases and free remix downloads on hisSoundcloud page and his website.

Various projects in the works and releasing soon: the Dopesauce EP with Black Mic (ft. Fat Ray, Scorpian, and Joe Mousepad), Honey I Crunk'd Tha Kidz EP with S.P.E.C.T.R.E., Breezee One's debut album, the SplaTTerboX (with GRiZ) debut album, the Tone Poets debut album, an EP with Ben Samples, the Zebbler Encanti Experience remix EP, the Bobby Tank remix EP with +verb, and more.

Various artists he has collaborated with / remixed / had remix: NastyNasty, NiTGriT, ill- esha, Samples, Heyoka, B. Lewis, Chuck Morris (of Lotus), Om Unit, RNDMS, Jaws That Bite, Shadow Attack, Omega, Drewmin, Zebbler Encanti Experience, Fat Ray, Bobby Tank, +verb, ill.so.naj, Elfkowitz, S.P.E.C.T.R.E., Inaudible, Mochipet, MC Zulu, Joe Mousepad, Black Mic, Breezee One, GRiZ, Lila Rose, Broken Haze, Augusta Morrison and more.

1. I'd love to know what your mixdown process looks like. I love how you can hear each instrument clearly, even when they seem like they'd interfere with each other frequency wise.

2. Is there any audio unit that you mainly use for stutters and glitches, or are you more of a copy 'n' paste-r? I've always been curious.

Thanks for your time and please continue making those tasty jams. I've had Neon Spectacle Operator on repeat for quite a while :D

Thanks for doing this Freddy, your music has had me going "whaaaat the hell!?" since the day i first heard it
Damn, where to start? First of, love the tunes man, all killer no filler.

1. I have a feeling you know a lot about sidechaining. Could you explain some of the main ways you use it in your tracks?

2. What DAW do you use and what are your top five plugins/synths you go to regularly?

3. Can you explain your basic sound design processes for your bass and synth sounds?

4. How do you get so much atmospheric space in your tracks (i.e the beginning of 'Rooftoppers')

5. Your style is fairly off the wall and very unique. Where does the inspiration for all your audio insanity come from? .

I'll have more later but I feel like that's a good start.

can you please explain the atmospherics that begin happening around 1:00 in this tune? its pretty wow.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ltxjLSFhDHg

aside from that, how do you go about processing your basslines once you have bounced them down to audio. you glitch technique fascinates me.

thanks for doing this
and keep doing what you do.

I've heard you can glitch shit a billion ways man. I'm interested in a few of your go to's and some others that you would recommend. What have you used in the past that really helped change your flow and get some of those amazing edits in?

Thanks for doing this homie. You've come a long way and I'm super glad to see you getting the respect you deserve.

your tunes are off the wall.

I would be interested to know what daw youre using for producing?

how much/what kind of analog equipment (if any) youre using for producing/post processing?

would you tell us about your dynamics control between different instruments and give us a little insight into how you use compressors?

beyond that, how do you churn out such ridiculously good music at the pace you do? what are some tips you could share for speeding up workflow to the point where tracks as crazy good as yours are getting done as quickly as you seem to be able to get them out? ...i mean, NSO was epic.

when can we expect to see you or SplaTTerboX in vancouver?

thanks alot for doing this, its well apreciated. keep tearing shit up.

(ps: bigups to dewey for hooking this up, as always)

1.) I heard you use FL Studio. Any plans on trying Ableton?

2.) Do you master your releases or send them to someone else?

3.) Do you ever spend time in a 'big' studio with a control room, console, etc? Any vintage gear you love/use?

4.) I want to check out Detroit. Any tips?

ur the man freddy todd. i always wondered how you got so many noises in one track. how do you go about selecting all your super psychedelic sounds? do you make most of them urself and if so on what software? when u have so many things going on in the higher frequencies, are you sidechain compressing them to one another so it doesn't sound muddy or conflicting? always admired how much substance your tunes have. thanks for the pineal exercise regiment.

p.s. i have a dream. a dream that one day i can listen to your tracks while cndyflppng on a roller coaster.
until then,
shinobi

Yooo --
Big thanks for doing this! And to everyone whos asked a question before... because now I dont have to write them all out myself hahah..

But okay, Whats your mastering process? Do you master your own tracks?

Your new album... is SO loud, while simultaneously being so clear... it had me listening to your music for atleast a week straight and going back into all my tracks and re-mixing them.

Other questions..
Do you split your basses? Low Mid and High freq? Do you do specific modulations to different ranges?

Thanks again!!

He's prolly busy bangin groupies or making more fire tunes....or maybe doing some sort of ritual to some ancient god to further increase his audio powers....
Or maybe you should like him on FB and use it for all your stalking needs, as I myself do.

Im most interested in learning about your workflow in Ableton. What LIVE instruments/fx do you use and for what process.. I really like how your drums are very glitchy and almost static sometimes but still have depth thru layers, any comments on your process? Thanks!
