So... Ive been reading the tutorials like a madman for this VSTi.

And i'm still not finding what i'm looking for.

Does anyone know how to make that deep LFO bass modulation that has a punchy lead.

I'm trying to get it to have that clicky snap at the beginning of each note but it just slowly glides on in and sometimes slides right into the next note which I do not want..

If anyone knows how to wire it up could you post a screen shot please?

So far i've found presets like joysticker and Scrapyard have this deep combing bass filter that I like so much. The math's give it that grainy modulation sound for sure and ive got the main OSC linked up to an envelope and most often the 8 stepper to swash up some of the frequencies and my main goal is to get the initial click at each peak in the 8 stepper which doesn't seem to be very friendly :(

If you can help - thankyou and is greatly appreciated!

I just started my recommended two weeks of playing with Massive. A tip I got from here. Have you read this thread?

glitchhop-production/walk-through-your-bass-t416.html

I'll check out those preset and get a better idea of what your talking about.

One thing Im liking is using the performer to modulation the LFO rate. and the LFO on the cutoff filter. you can also change the shape of the LFO to be it highest (open) by dragging the shape right to left with a mouse. Did you notice that? Like if you choose the triangle It starts down then in the middle is the peak and ends down. You can actually drag the visual shape to a different offsetting so it starts up then down directly in the middle then ends up again.

I must admit I'm not initially a fan of any of the Filters in Massive. I kind of hope that will change as the two weeks continues. The resonance gets to squeaky for my taste. I really like the LFO freq filter of the X:one 92 but that involves routing the signal out. Something I'll do later at the composition stage rather than the sound design stage. Who know maybe someone on this board will tell me the filter in Massive is like apples and oranges with the LFO of the 92 and I shouldn't expect the same results from massive. That could be true.

Im also thinking It might be something like I need to play 16 bars are cut out the one bar a like and build my bassline that way.

I hope that helps I'll check back tomorrow.

and id like to add, to get the metallic grimey filth layered on top of your bassline, use fm synthesis and resampling. i like to use operator in live or fm8 for this. then hi-pass filter around 150-300 depending on taste. then make an instrument rack, and dragging in an instance of operator set at a pure sine wave for the sub.

outside of ableton just duplicate the track and set up a synth with a pure sine wav to follow the same midi notes. if u want the sub to modulate with the midrange bass i'd recommend setting up an lfo to play at the same rate as the lfo modulating the midrange, except route it to volume for the sub. its really endless. there are some great tips in the make a bassline thread on this forum. also search dubstep forum, and the grid over at dogs on acid. hell, even idm forums.

re: the clicky snap u want... if u dont like the glided portamento legato result: tie in velocity to open the filter or add more resonance as you strike notes. or even keytracking. u could also get the same effect with the routing of a pitch envelope with a fast attack and quick decay.

what it comes down to fasho is:

have fun
sample like crazy
and modulate everything and anything

good luck. hopefully anything i said was helpful.

Regarding the snappy attack on a note:

I'm not sure this is what you're going for but try this. Add an envelope to the pitch of each active oscillator. Set the range to +1 or +2 octaves (12-24 semitones). Set the attack on the envelope so that when the note is played it bends down from the higher end of the pitch range back down to zero. Adjust the attach settings so that instead of a noticeable pitch bend it gives it more of a bass drum kicking sound. It definitely adds some punch to a bassline.

Also, don't forget the value of layering your bass sounds. You don't have to use one synth patch exclusively for a bass sound. If you want the top end to be punchy maybe you should split up the job between synths. Program one synth to handle the low end and another to tackle the punchy high end.

I'd really rather not share it public on the forums . I can hot-wire it right to you on MSN

I got those KSD's no problem

Did you try to drop them in

Documents > Native Instruments > Shared Content > Sounds > Massive

It will then show up in Massive in the Browser under My Sounds.

I'm on a Mac but It should be some what similar for PC I think.

Thanks for the downloads you guys!

Well here we are with a little bit of 11 hours of non-stop listening and tweaking.

This is one preset i've worked on for a little longer than the equivalent of 3 days now.

I only modulated the rate of ONE LFO which is fed through both the cutoff for a DAFT filter.

Timing is a little crappy in some parts, but a lot of it is usable to be sliced up and re-arranged between beats and drops.

Ill upload some more soundcloud in a bit

was starting to make my way through reading the Massive Manual. pretty long process. i usually get distracted easily from reading it and just start playing around and turning knobs till i make my own creations.

I have found that loading different presets and seeing how they are made is a good way to learn too.

Im still trying to create the ultimate phat bass line wobble, aint quite got it perfect yet.

the one really brutal thing about massive is that you can't automate any of the synced modulation parameters i.e. draw in 1/8 to 1/4 on an LFO or something like that

anyone have crafty ways around this? (besides unsyncing and winging it)

Yea the 8 step can do that as long as you've routed the LFO you want into the amp of the 8step, you can control the LFO by routing an envelope to the LFO's amp, and then have the envelope controlled by your macro, and control your macro with a midi controller :P

This used to really do my head in.

These days i use a separate plugin like sugar byte WOW or Fabfilter Volcano to do the wobbles. i find you get much more control over it this way and the automation is much easier.

One thing I like to do is use one LFO to control the speed of another LFO, so for example, you could have a pulse controlling the speed of an LFO that is controlling the cutoff. Then sync the pulse to 1/2 note and tweak the amount of automation of the cutoff-LFO until it sounds cool.

Another thing you can do is use the modulation matrix and draw in curves of various shapes and sizes to control your cutoff.

But honestly, on tracks where I do use LFO cutoff modulation, I'm usually doing it in Reaktor's filter, Logic's Autofilter, TBK, or the Moog's passthrough filter.
