I'll message Dewey and Ill-esha and see if we can get this going.

I would love to get down with this. I'm working on my album and really would like people who produce and that are unbiased to give me feedback.

Love the idea of this.
Though the means of sharing tracks in private is a problem. (googlewave won't work I can tell you that)

Maybe it's not a bad idea to just share soundcloud private links. If you are serious about your music you should have a payed account anyway right? This will kindo eliminate the "noobs" and keep the group to a decent size.

I have a secret account under the name "Tiafoni" :P but, if I upload tracks there, some1 will probably stumble upon it sooner or later, don't want any WIP to be openly on the web.

And I think the scoundcloud player with it's timed comments is best for giving specific feedback.
Alternatively, doesn't bandcamp have private links?

To build the database of members, make a required email application to join... Register an email address like GHFproducerscircle@whatever.com (moderators run this)
The group who pass applications will be notified and added to a pool of email address/forwarding list.
Then, via soundcloud private sharing, we simply share the tracks for this to that email address, moderators can then forward the email to the group and the commenting begins... No public access

As said, moderators will remove 'unwanted' members. Thanks to streaming, no downloads need to be active.

I'd upgrade my account just for that. (will be doing so anyway, like previously said, "if your serious, you will anyway")

JUST A THOUGHT... that could be totally dumb

we tried something like this...worked well for a few days then everyone kind of lost motivation. its a great idea, but turned out to be too much of a PITA i think.

Why not start small and let it grow. Imean.

If we "start" a group now, and have everybody accepted. Everybody posts their tracks, gives a little feedback. gets a bit more feedback... and that will be the end of it.
Why not let the people and tracks trickle in?
Yes, some would have to wait. But people have to get to know each other. That's much more like the friend group of 5 who shared their tracks.

I only joined this forum 4 months ago, and now I know a few of the members here and how they usually react or what they generally tend to say/type about things. It takes time and devotion to get to know people and stuff.

... it also builds respect and knowledge of people's producer capabilities..

(I just took a shower, and that's when good ideas come to me )
Why not use the things we already have?!

1. Everybody connect on soundcloud: If you want to commit to this, say so in a new thread we will create. And your name will get added to the member list.
(You’re not obliged to “follow” the members on soundcloud, but it’s kind to do so. As long as you join the feedback discussion on each track every week.)

2. Submit tracks with consideration: PM one of the group curators and state when you started the project, and when you are planning on finishing it / when your deadline is.

3. Create a roster: At a fixed day in the week, we announce who's track is gonna be reviewed that week. Order will be determined by creation date and/or deadline.
A few reviewed tracks and upcoming tracks (with dates) will be displayed as well.

4. Upload, Invite and Feedback: Right before that given day, the creator uploads his/her WIP to soundcloud and shares it privately to all the group members.
The group curators will post his/her URL in the main page of the thread ON the day of ””New Track To Feedback.
Then during the week, all members visit the track and discuss the production.

5. Finishing up: The creator comments back on most of the feedback and thanks the people that participated. It’s also the creator’s job to host the discussion on his/her own track. And keep an eye out for any members who are not giving feedback or playing by the rules.
Meanwhile the curators plan the next track that will be reviewed, delete reported members and add new ones.

--------

- In that single thread, just the first post will be editted every week, with the member list (+ soundcloud url, so people can follow on there) and ONE LINK to the track currently in review will be displayed.

- We all have to watch each other here, if someone fails too many times to not give feedback, it can be reported in the topic or PM-ed to one of the curators/moderators. (say so if ur on holiday or want out of the group)
This way the track and the comments stay private and that valuable info wont be in public on the forum.

- TIP: The track creator has to choose his/her soundcloud URL very carefully, in case you keep that track and publish it later on. In that case you have to delete any comments that show super secret info.

----

I'm up for this if we have maybe 8 to 20 people wanting in the group. Any larger and I'm afraid we need more curators/moderators to do this.
The thread on this forum will need to be moderated too since people might comment on it too much while it's more of an announcement thread.

Inofaith... It could work. Although the structure could prove to be its downfall there. With some of us, deadlines and time frames on a WIP just aren't always the case? But it's certainly something to consider...

ShifteQ: well it doesn't matter if you have a deadline or not right?
We would just create a roster, and if anybody has any requests i.e. 'I have 2 weeks of holiday to tweak tracks, I'd like to have feedback before that' we could move somebody further to the front of the list if it doesn't conflict.

My point was that we direct our attention to 1 track at a time, so we can really start a discussion in the comments. instead of 20 people just dropping of a comment saying 'the bass is too soft'.

Also, is there a good (brief) piece of writing on "how to give feedback" somewhere?
I'd like to have that as a READ-FIRST so people understand the core purpose of what the group was founded on.

Definitely agree with that... I guess i took it a little to seriously. I don't like serious :wgaf:

To be honest, it depends on moderators... I personally "don't" want to be that guy. Although, this is the kind of thing where the right people being involved become moderators of the group through continual use.

Any of the original fellas that came up with this still keen?

:poke:

Sander and his friends are definitely trading tracks weekly, he told me about it 2 years ago at Raindance on a head full of good psychedelics at our campsite. The idea stuck in my head for a long time but I have not been able to get a group of people that would religiously trade tracks weekly. Whoever is going to be a part of this has to create a "track a week" is the way Eeprom explained it. You start Monday and whatever the track sounds like saturday night is the final version no matter what! I don't remember if he said that the tunes are worked on after people critique them or not but I am thinking probably not. This will help you learn to not hesitate while arranging as well as promote doing a little PreProduction opposed to creating all of your elements on the fly " which is the main reason people don't finish tunes"! I am 100% game to be a part of this circle! I already have a soundcloud account so whenever you guys are ready let me know Jesseredwards@hotmail.com or soundcloud.com/zookeeper

Thanks

PS. Hey Sander if your reading this you should give us a little more insight on how you guys got this up and running and if you guys are completely finished with a tune after the week is up or do you make corrections after your tune is critiqued? We would really appreciate the advice! Grats on getting on warp!

That idea sound's legit. Although, it seems like the whole point for getting feedback from other producers who are savvy in the genre is to know what you should go back and tweak a little more. That way the track is the best it can be before releasing it to the public.

@zookeeper: what u are describing here sound really great. like skill boosting. Indeed, the main reasons lots of tracks get "stuck" is people hesitate to make big steps in the beginning, and they get harder later on into the track.

I like the idea of a weekly new work, and maybe if a track is worth it. you could tweak it and present it again the next week and let people hear the finished result... and maybe present a new track as well.

It's kindo like that topic about produce a track in xx minutes... that contest that red bull did.
Only here you review it, go back and try again, and again, and again.

This would work much more faster, since everybody gets to work a new track every weak instead of 1 track being dealt with in a week.
And its much more sustainable since it doesn't need any moderators/organisers.
Just members keeping in touch on soundcloud and privately sharing tracks. Getting together each week.

Well, I guess now we just need some organization and we got this! On the subject of Hesitation killing your tunes I would recommend that if any of you get the chance to take Ill Gates workshop pay the man his money and hear what he has got to say. This man brings some serious knowledge to the table about workflow enhancements that will aid you in making a tune a day. He has actually devised a system that will really help you pull your production together so that you are able to write high quality tunes that lack nothing in just hours opposed to days. I am not one to normally endorse anything but I can honestly say due to first hand experience that it was the best $50 dollars I have spent in years! I have been producing since 1996 and I still learned a lot of useful stuff. I believe his method is the true path to becoming a sequencer samurai even if you don't like or never heard any his music! Quality information worth checking out!!!

Hmmm I'm just working on this track now and could really use some feedback.

A good producer friend sorto told me "yeah awesome" "this sounds good"...

but that's not really helpfull since I'm writing a todo list for the track... and have the feeling I'm only coming up with 1/3 of what needs to be done on it to be finished.
