Just bought it. Best thing I've spent cash on in a while. Learning it right now, loving it. AMAZING DAW.

I get it.

I used to see people raving about renoise on boards, but every time I opened it, I was totally lost. Now that it's clicking, I TOTALLY GET why people rave about it. It's fucking epic!

ive been meaning to get into renoise for a while now but just haven't had the time. i have experience in FL and ableton and was wondering if anyone could fill me in -- whats it like transitioning to a tracker? are there any benefits to using one as opposed to traditional, horizontal composition? renoise does seem like a bad piece of kit, i like the stock sounds and plugs it comes with quite a bit, i just dont have any experience composing in it.

any thoughts?

perhaps i should start with the similarities first, so it dont seem so scary. and take comfort in the fact that many people go WTF?! when they first see it, and I was one of them coming from cubase and ableton.

horizontal vs vertical: there's actually very little difference ( especially with the new pattern matrix)

they both trigger or read sounds depending on where they are, ie a kick wav starts where the clip starts in say FL, and in renoise, it starts where the note is entered.

so the same thing really, they both sequence audio in the same way,... it just looks different.

think of trackers as an mpc/midi sampler vst on steroids where the DAW is built around said mpc/midi vst, instead of building a DAW to replicate the studio and then adding midi. or imagine a DAW built around Kontakt, and you get an idea.

the differences come in workflow, so instead of dragging a clip to the position, you figure out where on a grid you want the audio to start and you enter a note there,.... so just like midi, only you can do this with both midi and audio. then you have a whole bunch of other commands to tweak the position relative to the grid, delay a bit, nudge etc, so you're not confined to following the grid.

for example:

boom.........clack......boom boom clack

in a horizontal you'd need to place the first boom, copy then paste twice to the position of the next two booms. then place the snare clack, and copy paste the next one.

in a tracker:

enter boom note on first line in track one.
enter snare clack note on 4th line in track 2.
move to line 6 of track one, enter 2nd boom, move down two lines, enter boom.
move to line 10 in track 2, enter second snare.

or once you get used to it and know where you want the notes for the sound you want, program all your kicks in one go and all your snares together:

enter boom note on first line in track one
move to line 6 of track one, enter 2nd boom, move down two lines, enter boom.
enter snare clack note on 4th line in track 2.
move to line 10 in track 2, enter second snare.

then its just copy paste to repeat the patter just like in midi.

the main difference is the effect commands, which are commands that you can use to tell the tracker how to play back the audio,.... so if you wanted to stutter a note once for a duration of 4 lines you go:

E1
E1
E1
E1

and you'll get a drill sound. the E=retrigger, the 1 means do it every 1 tick ( a division of a line). sub the 1 with 2, 3,4 and you get different sounds cos you're telling the tracker to play it back differently,........ all without a vst. this is built in.

there's no real advantage of one app over another, its more to do with your workflow, and if you're not as efficient as you like then definately try it out. but if you're getting good results with horizontal then stay there by all means. autechre have praised renoises reverb, and some of the native fx are pretty damn good.

for glitching, its perfect, you dont need effectrix or instajungle or dblue glitch( dblue is a renoiser btw), but they're fun to have in addition to the internal effect commands.

personally, i find positioning clips on a horizontal timeline to be brainnumbingly tedious, trackers have spoiled me,... but again i know people who can blaze through a beat on horizontals so,.....

check out the tutorials, download the demo, you might get it and never look back or you might not,... but it is worth trying.

no worries man, once i get started the verbal diarhea just flows :D

one thing i would add,...

i've been getting my dirty glitchy bass sounds solely out of a combination of random samples + x9xx + Ex retrigger + native fx like flangers + native LFO +key tracker device,... havent needed to load a synth in ages.

 trackers  i'm so gay for them
