Hey guys!

Last week my classmate asked me if I could be DJ in a party he is arranging in a couple of months. Now, i've created some beats/songs, and created a list of songs I wanna use. But then I realize, I have no idea how a DJ actually act "on stage". There is going to be about 200 people there, and I want to look like a proffesional.

Any tips?

definitely look excited, be as positive as possible, try to show the crowd a good time while having one yourself if @ all possible.

most importantly, no matter what happens (even if your equipment completely fails - which will happen occasionally to even the best) DO NOT PANIC and again try to be as positive as possible. remember people are at the party to have a good time, and a crappy smiling DJ is sometimes much better than a good frowning one!!!

Don't act... Just do your thing. Yes, remember your pleasing a crowd, but a crowd is most likely going to be most pleased if you are with yourself...! Have fun

I wear really big Bling and always grab my headphones while cocking my head a little bit into them. As long as you never make eye contact and act like you're doing something you will totally look like a DJ. Also it helps to have hoes standing around you for eye candy and tell them to grind on you a lot

Listen.
Don't think about being professional. Think about this. You are at that party to do two things: Play music to get people music, and to have fun. Now a lot of people confuse these two things for one. I did, for a long, long time. A lot of people take this to mean that simply by playing good music, people will get into the set because you enjoy the music that's playing is danceable or appropriate.

Granted, playing the right selection of music is crucial. But what is more important is to remember at all times to enjoy yourself. Remember where you are, and how you got to that point. You are the champ, and this music is what you win at. Get into it. Remember with every tweak of knob, every switch of a fader why you began to dj. Do it with style because you can- you're you! Do it big, and though dealing with anything that goes wrong may be stressful, enjoy yourself.

You don't need to drink excessively, but don't forget to enjoy the time you are the dj. Be careful of people around your gear and leaving it open, and remember that answering some requests when you can goes a long way. Be courteous, but confident, and don't let people whining about not playing a request immediately get on your nerves. Because when you're doing something you truly enjoy, people will feel the energy. Every frustration on your mind saps this. That's why it's so important not to panic when glitches arrive (as they often do). If you know of any with your setup, try to have a backup. Recover strong and get the crowd going, feeling the vibe you're putting out. If you're dwelling on the mistake, that's what they pick up on, and it is reflected in the crowd's energy.

To handle a glitch professionally?
Remember that it's temporary. A stumble. Kick up your feet and keep going.

and as tome of great wisdom says right on the cover:

DON'T PANIC!

Have a blast!

Fist pumps! Seriously, toss in a few of those. Yell at the crowd like you're angry at them too. Not only will this look cool in a picture, but they'll love you more for it.

Seriously, this is got to be the most polite forum I've ever seen. Thank you everyone, and especially The Asterite for great tips and guidance!

I can also mention that I have been doing alot of audio engineering jobs past the last months, and I have also done a few guitar gigs for a big audience, so I know everything about doing mistakes and facing problems. This should not be a huge problem.

PS: I'm from Norway, so sorry if there is a lot of grammar errors and bad language.

Just gotta say I saw PANTyRAID last friday and marty party man that fuckin guy knows how to keep a crowd pumped. lots of bass facing and big movements with his controller just big in general, I think at one point he told the crowd the cops were there and we should be quiet, shut everything off for a second, then dropped the sickest loudest most fuck you bassline, everyone went nuts. I don't think the cops were even there they could have been, good tactic. Made me feel like I was 16 again.

There's some good youtubeage of him live check it out.

Invent your own dance move. It cant hurt... plus its fun to try and get the crowd to do your silly dance.
Seriously, watching a bunch of people pretend to start their lawnmower, or pretending to hit a nail with a hammer is awesome.

Throw a fist pump if your in some kind of fratty situation.

Take a break before your slow jam starts and tell people to go find themselves a cute girl or guy to grind on.... or if you see people gettin really close, throw on pony from ginuwine. Shit is some OG bwompbwomp for the ladies.

Just make the bass face at unsuspecting people in the front. Do this at least 3 times every half hour. Show them you mean business and your business is mean.

Really tho, its hard to find the balance between having fun showing off your silly ass shakin and the showstealing musicianship stuff you worked so hard on in the studio.
