re: brostep

you know there is actually some good, well produced brostep out there but theres also a whole bunch of mid range rubbish. I don't know glitch hop was kind of like the last bastion of hope for me and now it looks as if it's headed down the toilet as well.

i just wish it would go back to sounding like this and stop trying to be all like mr electro party rocker.

Lol. Maybe we should put you in charge to standardize all the culture and kill off the electro party offshoot crap...

jk... im just in a funky mood.

But stop bitching about it and get to work. If you don't like where the music is heading, either dig in different bins, or write a damn album and push it. I personally think those electro things are ok, because it's just a transient, fickle ass moment in time. I dont have to enjoy every single sound, but I appreciate that they exist. The sound you're complainin' about will be here today and gone tomorrow. I feel like I too spend too much energy and time complaining, and not doing shit about it.... especially when there are still ill ass innovators around doing things like prefuse, but in their own way. There's no time to bitch about what others are doing man.... Find that sound you be lookin' for and push it harder than everyone else.

Besides, Id much rather listen to some kind of electro glitch-hoppy, midtempo tip-hop soundalike, rather than fuckin' trance or some gay ass manufactured top40 schwag. Anything that isnt just unce unce is acceptable for me when I go out at this point. After an hour of that shit, I wanna punch the DJ in the head. lol.

I feel all angry like that^^, but the rest of the club's saying "this shit's awesome ya?"

We as glitch-hop producers, on this bad ass forum chock full of useful information and collaboration, ought to get to work to turn some of those trance-heads to the dark side. That's all Im saying.

its all good dude im not saying you have to agree with me, it's just how i feel. people generally feel diff about things, and i can be quite negative about shit at times.

I really don't think im a good enough producer to make anything thats going to change the game up. i just kinda like to have a moan to stir up some interesting conversation from people. instead of the usual mindless "yeah man this shits dope" etc that everyone always says about every tune.

glitch has a bit of a higher production standard than a lot of other types of eletronic music (see; dubstep) but i don't know if im feeling much of it anymore but thats just me...i still post on dnb forums 10 years after i stopped listening to it.

I've got to agree, I've heard a lot of Glitch Hop that really just sounds like Brostep with a Trance lead and while I personally don't care for it, I've seen it drive a lot of people off the dance floor mostly based on the fact that it's too "Big Room" for the time slot that the dj is holding down. This is true with every genre though. I've seen way to many opening slots drive me out of the club and to the bar across the street while I wait for the vibe in the crowd to match the vibe they are throwing out. Still, I've actually had some luck with Glitch Hop in some odd places as long as it's got some pop reference point. I played at a gay bar once and had the dance floor go crazy to that old Nasty Ways remix of Lollipop.

Playing house parties can be tough and you'll quickly learn how to dispense of requests (mine is always "Damn it! I have it but I must have left it at home. Sorry about that.")

Still, most dj booth requests are sadly going to sound like this.

lolll. Dude... That vid demonstrates how aggravating those kind of people are. I think an easy way to protect the dj from that is to have a gate in front of the booth with muggin ass security. lolz.

I hear what you're sayin. Im bored of ze dubstep too. In fact, im pretty bored with most scene shit now. I just like glitch-hop because I still cant figure out exactly what it is. Two glitch songs can be very disparate, wheras dubstep feels like it's been too institutionalized... or standardized or w/e. There's still dope songs that can be labeled dubstep, but they definitely dont sound like skrillex or datsik.... they just have a tempo around 70/140 bpm.

with serato etc nowadays, you should be able to mix in thngs to get ppl on the floor happy - then move into the territory you want....

back home in the UK, i played nights where im put on after a dub / reggae dj - so whack a few uptemo reggae classics, mix in some classic hiphop gfunk etc, or something like 'as we enter' and move into some more-accesible glitch stuff... by the end everyone will be feeling the hevier stuff... hardest i find is when im put on after someone who plays higher tempo music than me - like a elctro dj, and ive got to bring everything down from 130 to 100-115 without clearing the floor.... i like to build sets up, but those sets you kind of have to build down, then up....

currently, I'm living in Korea, i can tell you now most music i like doesnt fly with Koreans very well. I use a lot of ghettofunk and popular breaks, and try to mix in some K-Pop... some it kind of works... if you ever get a Korean in your audience, throw in "I am the best" by 2NE1 or "put your hands up" by 2PM, will work a dream :p

I don't know about a lot of "dance" music anymore it really seems so two dimensional and just like a "fad" if that makes sense. There is still good stuff being made out there but the general public seems to like cheesy fucking bollocks.

the whole dj scene seems to bitchy and posey to me now and not based on talent or hard work or orginality at all, more based on who you know, how many groupies you have or something.

anyway im kinda signing out of glitch hop for now, gonna try going back to 140 bpm again for a while, not dubstep or juke though, they can suck my balls.

why did i make this post? who the fuck knows.

I haven't been kicked out, but once I was drunk and high (aka. Danish Viking-Rampage McShitfaced). 45 minutes in I'd made enough mistakes to just pack my shit up, and ask a friend to cover for me. Never felt so ashamaed, as when I apologized to the booker (we're still on good terms), and walked out. Never gonna let that happen again T_T

I haven't been kicked off yet, but I did have to cut my set short when some drunk hipster asshole spilled his glass of wine all over my macbook pro...

To cut a long story short, I never saw a penny from the dude and I am still in the process of getting my laptop fixed... 2 years later.

I can't stand when the audience is so drunk and rude. I wish there were more underground parties I could play at around me... I'd much rather play for people who are looking for that next level sound, instead of drunk dbags who only want to hear the shit they already know... Every party I play there is a constant stream of shitty requests. Then they get mad when I don't play what they expected. If you want to hear Justice or Daft Punk, go to their show! When your listening to a DJ, let them pick the tunes!

It's hard to focus on mixing and doing your job when so many assholes keep bothering you with nonsense.

The audience is becoming douchebags who think they know more than the DJ. I'm tryna get some good events started in my city soon though. Hopefully once I establish myself a little more, people will start showing more respect. I guess it's just part of the gig.

Im just going to start making a reallly coool, inexpensive event with some bomb ass sound (maybe like a quad 18" bag end setup, with some jbl mains or somethin.) Then ill start laying out the dope sounds, and trying to get other people's takes on it, but leave out the riff raff crowd via telling people only by word of mouth. Then the free event will pull peeps in. If anybody from here up in nor cal wants to come drop a set in my basement (its a big basement) to a heady, over the bs, crowd, I think there will be a small new venue for experimental music soon. Time to work out some deets.

wow you guys are so cool! I've been really lucky and only had a few bad experiences. the worst was when this chick was like'I'm a DJ you know' and then started screwing with my decks. I packed up and left.

Or my favorite, when the other housemate wants to listen to top 40 when the place is going off. WTF? Everyone is having a good time, I bring all my ggear for nothing. GFTO. I said no last time was awesome.

I mostly mix smaller house parties and some regional burn events here in the mid-atlantic us. Some of friends out in Pittsburgh, turned my onto Grime last august & I found myself coming out of a nearly 5 year hibernation from new music head deep in glitch-hop as a favorite genre as of last november. It's been a challenge building up a catalog deep enough to prevent double dips but I find it accomodates constant forays into many different styles easily pulling back to a harmonically fulfilled bassy heartbeat. Since I missed the "rise/fall" of dubstep it becomes difficult for me to discriminate between some of those crosses.
Most of the parties I've been at tend to have a heavy psy-trance, electro-tech house component, styles which personally tend to bore me yet have fellow attendees rockin & shaking til the break of dawn.
I've always preferred industrial, funk, chill, world artists and find elements of all reflected with a good dose of hop.
Recently there has been a concerted effort amongst the djs to mix it up a bit more so I've been well received by hosts as we break the night up into various styles. Originally was pre-mixing to keep my head if I was having too much fun, however it quickly became obvious that too stay flexible enough to play to the crowd that a live set-up was necessary so I just picked up my first midi controller & am starting to learn it. The looping & effects seem pretty fierce so far unfortunately it doesnt map for Ableton. I still usually end up with a slot somewhere between 2-4 am & depending what else is going on @ the residence I may have a room with intensely sitting head boppers or pretty people feeding my eyes or both. I've been asked to bring it up tempo wise once when the stoned krunk vibe wasn't hitting the speedy anxiety of attendees and yet still got mant aataboys on the shoulder for the set afterwards.
Some folks like the varietal wanderings & some enjoy the selections but wish there was more uniformity referring to the mixes as schizophrenic. I'm just pleased to have the opportunity to share stuff I like with others, and even when I don't agree with the feedback it's cool too get the opportunity to get practice with a live crowd to see what's working.

Thanks again for all of these pearls GHF E>
