have you ever been shown the door? living in florida has caused this to happen to me more than once. last night i was at a house party with open decks, it was a house music crowd and i told them i was gonna play some glitch hop. 3 songs in i was asked to step off so they could continue listening to house music. i graciously obliged cause idgaf and lold. i played megasoids hot dolla remix, edits more lazers and bear mods my 64 remix in that order. ive also been kicked out of a club for playing evacs ground control because the manager thought i had blown his speakers, i guess he had never heard grimy ass bass. ah well, haters gonna hate. :D

It's happened at a few house parties in my day. I usually just pack my shit up and go somewhere else. People are crazy.

i haven't gotten kick off, but i've stopped performing my tracks and broke down all my equipment at a friends house because i couldn't deal with people asking me to play lady gaga and other top 40 songs.

house partys are hard to be successful at sometimes because most likely the people there are not coming to see you or to hear the music you are playing. it's not like a show or weekly night at a club that people go to hear that type of music.

two nights ago i was up to my eyeballs bad requests, so much so i was as close as i ever was to walking out, there was just no love. some drunk late 30 something uggos kept requesting Michael J nonstop. Then later in the night a bunch of 'indie electro' ppl came from a crystal castles concert that had just gotten out. They kept requesting stuff like arcade fire and bloc party. finally at the end of the night i told them i'd play some indie rock for them but dropped eprom's 'rubber sheets' instead. ftw

'indie electro'

This is gonna get us off topic but in my opinion indie electro is not electronic music. The feel is miles and miles from what real electronic music is. In abstract terms what I just said is a bunch of nonsense but when you think in terms of scenes it seems pretty reasonable.

I've never been actually kicked off, which is lucky. Every so often I get a gig that requires more top 40 than I have and I get some comments about "could you play the real version" (when I dropped Mochipet's Like A G6 remix) but usually I pull through somehow. At house parties I've noticed that things that are '80s-like and/or funky usually fly, which is good cause I like '80s funk. After a few of those tracks you can start to pull people into anything. Starting with glitch-hop can be hard, although that depends on the place. I've played some glitch-hop house parties, which are where it's at.

The majority of my playing has been at House Parties. Fortunately, there are a couple that I keep getting invited back to and am really appreciated at..

There have also been some full of requests, and generally rude people, like the one drunk woman who claims that she alone is my audience and 'you have to play for your audience right?'.. She went on to call another DJ a little prick, which was humorous, then proceeded to go pass out in her car for the remainder of the night.. It's nice when situations deal with themselves..

Another recurring situation I occasionally have is people saying that they have been to a lot of parties which undoubtedly makes them some sort of an expert, and right now I need to play something more 'organic' or straight up Buddha Bar. That shit can be irritating.

There have been times where I have played my heart out for no one, and just completely lose interest, so I'll call it a night if there is someone else willing to take over.

Apart from that, there's time being cut short, or people flat out dissing..
Thank the lord for sensible party goers.

man, I was hoping I wasnt the only one!

I wish I could have a picture of me spinnin at this one hose party, and It was me on the decks with a drink, my best buddy next to me, and then about 40 people out back listening to my "background music."

fun party..

ive ceded my spot at a fundraiser once in ottawa, there were some really good breakers out, and i must admit i didnt have the right tempo on hand to get them the momentum they needed. At the end of the night, its about people having a good time, and killing the ego enough to let go is hard but very, very important...

If its obviously not working and theres no chance im going to pull it back ill let the next guy on a lot earler rather than go through the pain, so havent ever been kicked off. Its only ever happened at house partys though, where everyone wants lighter techno / house and I've rocked up with some glitch, so fair enough really.

yeah that was pretty much the case. the guy that asked me to step off was the owner of the house and it was his birthday and he was nothing but polite about it. his gf was the one that asked me to throw down cause she likes music other than house. shes a dj for hallucination as well, it really wasnt a big deal, i was just trying to get mah crunk on and i can appreciate that other people have terrible taste in music ;) <winky face emoticon to show i am just joking

im actually not suprised this happens with glitch hop. if you are not playing to a glitch hop crowd most people will just wtf at you.

ive never played a glitch hop set out. but house partys used to be so fucking annoying when i dj'd dnb that i actually decided not to do them anymore.

you got to realize that until glitch hop is popularised, people are gonna hate on it. its its a pretty easy genre to hate on. some girl told me the other night that if i played at glitch hop nights she wouldn't come as there would be no females there. wich is probably kinda true sadly.

i know its prob not like this in some towns round canada/us/uk/australia but here in auckland, glitch hop is unheard of almost.

I've been at both ends of this spectrum in regards to house parties. Never been asked straight up to get off the decks but I have almost stopped playing myself because of drunken sorrority girls constantly requesting Lady Gaga (I played Knight Riderz speaker humpin instead ;p ) but I have also been at house parties where people went CRAZY for the glitch hop with everyone wilding out and head banging with their hands in the air. I even had one girl break a pipe I gave her to hit because she was head banging so hard (I couldn't be mad either because she was dancing harder then anyone else in the room).

Definitely not like that here in Canada. In fact, every time I play a set, all I can see are ladies. I get off and suddenly it's all guys. Women love that shit.

I cannot stand UK Funky. It reminds me of being 16 again with absolutely no taste in music at all ages shows. Back when genre was house, techno and trance and nobody had a clue.
