So the problem I have been running across is that I have all my tracks set up in session view, and it all seems so "Set up" to me. Recently Ive been watching videos on other people mixing in ableton, And Im seeing alot of people that have a folder set aside were there have all there tracks "Pre warped, and set into the clips they want". from there they pull up there folder, and lay there tracks into channels 1, 2 , 3 or wherever they want. And I cannot figure out for the life of me how to do this. I want to add more variety to my sets, and not feel so "pre set up." I know this is such a noob question, but I hvnt been able to figure this out, If anyone can point me in a direction to figure this out I would be highly appreciative. :D

Guessing you figured out the File Browser window and how to multi select / drag clips in right? :D :D :D

File browser is kind of a wtf @ first. Trust me, this took me a while too to figure out.

If you need any more help holla back!

It's all about saving analysis files, and use wav so live doesn't have to encode everything you drag in..

make sure you make one big project with tracks as .als files.... i fucked up at first so i have hundreds of tracks saved as projects so it requires me to open the project folder to get to the .als files. ugh. maybe one of these days ill fix it lol.

What Im doing now is dragging all the warped files into the side bar, and it saves them there, and all the clips w/ cue points as well. There very easily accessable, but what Im afraid of is soon, there will be so many tracks that they will be hard to just regularly surf through to find what I want. I found Ill. Gates's post on the ableton forums about how to set up with different tags, and everything but Im having problems trying to do it the way he is now. Anyone else using his method with a little insight? Thanks everyone whos dropping information, Its helped alot so far. :)

You could always reorganize your clips in to folders based on BPM range or by subgenre.

This is also what I do with a lot of my "sampler" style one shots.

For my "DJ crate" I make sure to save analysis files (.asd) with the original audio file (.wav) - You can do this by clicking the little Save button in the clip properties - it will save the naming, color, warping, launch modes, follow actions, etc.. This way the raw .wav can be dragged from the browser. It's good to go as long as the .asd is with the audio file.

Sometimes I go even further by splitting the single clip into multiple clips (cue-points) and as you've found out, if you drag a chunk of clips to the browser it will save a live set (.als) - I just save these right next to the .wav so I know everything is in the same place. This works great for cuepoints since live doesn't really have them, and also for follow-action monome-style clip setups.

By doing this I can actually organize and store my tunes outside of my main template, making everything in the moment and sporadic because my template has no clips in it until I drag some content in.

Now when it comes to my original tracks its very similar but instead of just one vertical row of clips it's 5 stem layers - same method of storing these clips as before, I can save this (5 layer) x (5 cuepoint) chunk as a live set and drag it in whenever - this is all outlined in my tutorials - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLBC2D847094A81274

Oh, and since Ableton's browser is basically crap I've actually started to organize tracks in iTunes, labeled with Artist, Name, BPM, Key (camelot system) , Genre, Description, Comments, etc.. this way I can sort how I want and search for tracks a lot easier, but I wish this was all covered in Ableton because iTunes doesn't recognize .als files so I am still using the built in browser for those.. Live needs a browser overhaul

very simple, we do it a lot like dark matter. Since you are already going through your tracks and warping them, it is easiect to create a "clip pack" at the time you warp the track. Our clip packs are usually 4 clips (to coincide with the 4 horizontal buttons on our trigger finger) the clips can be, for example: start of the song, breakdown, a drop and a good mix in/out spot. Labeling the clips is helpful too, especially if its a track that is hard to mix/in or out of. Dont worry about losing the name of the track when you drag it into the browser because you have to rename clip packs anyways.

We usually name them "Key - track name - bpm". It is all preference but we like to have tracks organized by key first so we can get some flawless mixes on the fly. I hear a lot of people complain about lives browser, but you can always organize in seperate folders... I think minimizing the amount of clicks to get your track to your channel is the best, less margin of error.

We just simply have a hot crate folder for songs we definitely want to drop that night and a master crate folder for everything else... (plus other folders for loops or acapellas or whatnot) i wouldnt go to crazy with a lot of folders, things will get more unorganized if you try to organize too much.

hope that helps. Peace! ( and agree with drk.mttr, live should get a browser overhaul... im sure it will happen sooner than later)

Using folders is a good point.. Live will recognize "aliases" (Mac os x) in the browser.. So essentially you could keep all your raw audio stored away and make aliases for each track and organize THOSE into folders.. I could see that working for tracks that fall into multiple folder categories (just duplicate the alias).. Not sure if this works on windows with "shortcuts" maybe someone could try it..
